Did you know that "helping out" could hurt your child?
Of course, your child is going to need your help to learn and to do things sometimes. But once they know how to do something, jumping in too quickly or taking care of the task for them even every now and then can actually confuse your child and undermine their sense of personal responsibility. For example, once your child is able to make their own bed, it doesn't make sense for you to do it for them ever again. It might not seem like a big deal to make the bed for a child who has forgotten to do it and has already moved on to something else in their day but it could inadvertently send the message to your child that, "If you don't take care of this responsibility, then I might take care of it for you." Consequently, your child is less motivated to be consistent in taking care of the task themselves and developing their own sense of personal responsibility.
