Did you know that the key to understanding your daughter´s friendships may be right in front of you?
Parents are often baffled by some of their daughter´s difficulties, poor choices, or struggles with friends over the past few years, there has been a particular awareness and focus on girls who are "mean" to other girls. Of course, this type of behavior is unlikely to ever disappear completely but you can help your own daughter develop more positive friendships by looking more closely at your own relationships. Ask yourself: Do I ever make negative comments about one friend when talking to another friend? Do I ever excitedly share the sordid details of another person´s misfortune? Do I emphasize others´ looks more than I do their kind actions? Do I stay in relationships with negative or unhealthy people due to my own loneliness or to avoid hurting feelings? Children look at our decisions and our actions and accordingly shape their own values and relationship behaviors. While no one can be expected to be perfect, trying your best to model the values you want to develop in your daughter will help to avoid confusion and help her to learn how to develop and to maintain healthy and happy relationships.
