Did you know that most children in the U.S. watch television between 3 to 6 hours every day?
While sometimes informative and entertaining, television is a very passive and narrow means of engagement with the world around us. Behavior and values portrayed are often not the consistent with those you´d choose for your child either. Children learn through active engagement in their world (ex: in discussion, play with others). If your daughter needs some quiet time, reading a book or completing a puzzle would do more to stimulate her imagination and love for learning. When your child does watch television, know what they´re watching open discussion about your daughter´s thoughts regarding the behaviors, choices, attitudes, and values portrayed and communicating your own ideas and values will help her to become a better consumer of the many messages she will receive in the media now and throughout her life.
