GETTING INVOLVED
Clean Up Your Community
Ellie, 11, Kansas
Last fall, my friends and I participated in Clean Community Day, a day where groups of citizens get assigned a place in the town to clean up. Everyone gets a big, black bag and gloves. The purpose is to clean up all of the litter that clogs the beautiful, and not so beautiful, areas in our community.
My group got assigned a road where the elementary school is. So it was especially important for us to get it very clean. Since this was my first Clean Community Day, I was shocked by how much litter there was! There was plastic, glass, cigarette butts, paper, and everything else you can think of. By the time we were finished, the road was spotless. We were really proud of ourselves. I am already signed up for next year's Clean Community Day! You can help your community like I did by going to your town's website and searching under volunteer work. I found it very worthwhile, and I hope you do too!
