GET INVOLVED: GIRLS HELPING OUT
- PART 2
Want to change the world, but don’t know
where to start? “What can just one
person do?” you might ask yourself. The
answer is: a lot. Read on to see how
these Miss O Club members got involved
and helped out. Just even helping out a
neighbor makes a big difference to that
one person! If you’ve made a difference
in your community or volunteered, we

Helping with a
School Event
By: Amanda, 24, PA (aka JLsgurl4eva)
It was a couple of years ago when I
helped serve food and refreshments at a
school prom. I thought it was so cool
that I got to help with that event
because I loved preparing food, and
helping others and making a difference
even if it was in just a small way. I
really enjoyed helping others and just
making a difference in other people’s
lives. I thought somebody should try to
help others and start making a
difference so why not me. I still sit
and think about that night by helping
others and making a difference.
Helping My
Neighborhood
By: Jennifer, 11, AZ (aka
hiphoppindiva11)
My best friend and I are total nature
freaks. We are mesmerized by plants,
trees and wildlife. Anyway, we were on
the subject of all the trash build-up
there is in Yuma, AZ (our hometown) so
we got to thinking of calling up the
city mayor and getting his permission to
host a "Trash-A-Thon". Here’s how it
works. People sign up to be on what’s
called the "Rubbish Sign-Up Sheet" so
people can sign their names to
participate. What they have to do is
show up with $5.00 to buy a tee-shirt so
we know who is participating or not.
Then they must walk around the park
however many times they would like.
Every mile they walk we earn $1.50. So
if a person walks 3 miles we get $4.50!
All of that money will contribute to
cleaning up the park, new equipment,
cleaner benches and tables, re-painted
sidewalks, new plantlife and shrubs, a
new sprinkler system, and maybe, a
beautiful garden. All of the
possibilities are endless, and we want
to, more than anything, make our
community a better place to live!
Making a
Difference
By: booboo, 10, NJ (aka soccergirl1212)
Have you ever had that feeling where you
want to help out but don’t have the
time? Well, you can still help by doing
little things. Here are some things you
can do...
- Recycle! Throw your soda can in a recycling
bin, instead of a trash can.
- Decide what you want from the fridge before
you get it. You may not know it, but your saving
electricity.
- Reuse your folders from last year’s school
year.
- Use both sides of a piece of paper.
Also, come up with anything else you can think
of. You can make a difference.
Caring
By: Jaime, 10, MO (aka GirleGirl101)
It was late in the school year, I was ready for
summer! Our Girl Scout troop was doing one last
charity drive. My mom came up with the idea of
helping the Animal Protection Association by
collecting newspapers. The puppies and kittens use
them in their cages. We collected mounds of
newspapers. Finally we delivered them. We got to see
the puppies. I felt so bad for them. They were
begging for us to take them home. One of them,
Houser survived a tornado. At the end of the day I
realized that just a little bit a caring goes a long
way.
If you want to help someone, don’t be
shy, get some friends and do it! |
