GET INVOLVED: GIRLS HELPING OUT
- PART 1
Want to change the world, but don’t know
where to start? “What can just one
person do?” you might ask yourself. The
answer is: a lot. Read on to see how
these Miss O Club members got involved
and helped out. Just even helping out a
neighbor makes a big difference to that
one person! If you’ve made a difference
in your community or volunteered, we
want to know about it! Submit your story
and you might get published in the Miss
O Scoop.
Dog
Sitting
By: Miranda, 11, GA (aka roxygirl9595)
My neighbor can’t take care of her dog
so I do it for her. I get paid $5 every
week. I take her outside to do her
business and if it’s a nice day I leave
her outside but if it’s not then I take
her back inside and wipe off her feet.
Then feed her. I like babysitting and
pet sitting because I like to watch out
for people and have fun. The money
doesn’t matter to me, as much as being
with the animals that I love and care
about. This dog is a really sweet dog
and it was good for me to spend more
time with her. Maybe you’ll get to know
the animal or person more. And besides,
it’s fun too.
Harvesters Experience - Helping The Poor
Feels Great!
By: Riley, 9, MO (aka rileym8)
I love helping out anytime I can so when
my Girl Scout Troop was going to
Harvesters to help organize food for the
poor I said yes. When we got there we
were instructed to put about 12 tomatoes
in a bag and give them to an adult that
would tie the bags up and fill a cart.
We would keep doing that until the
tomatoes ran out. A lot of people got
gloves and so did I. I saw green peppers
waiting to be put in bags so my friend
and I went over there and started
putting green peppers in bags. We put
four, five, or six green peppers in the
bags depending on their size. When other
things started to run out some other
kids and I put the green peppers and
tomatoes in boxes that had bread and
other vegetables in them. We also put
bread in the boxes that didn’t have
bread. When everyone was done people
picked out the leftovers and took crates
home. It’s sad how many people out there
can’t afford their needs, but with help
from you, me, and everyone else out
there, there might not be as many poor
people. Like I said in the title helping
the poor feels great!
Note: This is a TRUE story!
Fun
with Fleece
By: Rebecca, 9, MA (aka beckywec)
Well, me and 11 of my friends started
the U.S. foundation (united sisters)
because we wanted to make blankets to
donate. We had all done the tying knots
no-sew blankets so those were our
choice. We asked my teacher, Miss Hill
what organization we should donate to.
She thought it was a good idea to get
the whole class involved. We got a 400
dollar discount from Jo-Ann fabrics. We
were making 20 blankets for the homeless
at school! When they were done we each
wrapped them. Then Miss Hill announced
we were going on a after school field
trip to the friendly house to give them
to the homeless face-to-face. It was
great! The news came with us and covered
our story. Me and Susie (my friend),
cried all of the way home! We were so
happy. Everyone there had a smile and
Susie’s person repeated thank you seven
times! That was the most fun thing we
did this school year!
Feel
Good About Yourself…Help Others!
By: Olivia, 9, CT (aka dolph8787878)
Once, my friends and I did a charity
drive for our school. We called it
"Deeds for Those in Need.” Our charity
helped Hurricane Katrina victims. We did
a play and bake sale for the whole third
grade! Our total goal was $100.00, but
we ended up earning $110.50. After the
show, everyone wanted my friends and my
autographs. I felt proud and happy that
I helped someone less fortunate than me,
and I am glad that I did.
If you want to help someone, don’t be
shy, get some friends and do it! |
