GETTING TO KNOW: MICHAEL COPON

Recently, “Beyond the Break” cutie, Michael Copon, sat down with Teenmag  to shoot the breeze. Here’s what the 23 year-old Virginia native had to say for himself.

Chris Hunter
Teen: What's the worst date you've ever been on?
Michael Copon: I would have to say my prom. I moved to LA when I was 17 and prom is supposed to be a big deal. I think that's why I went, I don't normally go on dates. I went with my best friend at the time, this girl Jamie. I had been in love with her, like, my whole high school life, even though I was dating someone else, she was always my little crush. I flew home and got us a car and had the plan ? everything was going to be perfect. We went out to dinner and had a great time. But we get to the prom and her ex-boyfriend was there. She had been dating him for two years. He took some random girl because he found out we were going together. So the whole time she was like, "I've got to go talk to him." So I'd see them fighting and talking and then she said, "Mike, he just wants one dance." So I said, "That's cool." That one dance turned into dancing the whole night! And I would look at her and I was sad and she'd give me that look like, "I'm sorry, what do I do?" I think I ended up just going home by myself that night. That's messed up!

Teen: What's something people would be surprised to know about you?
M.C.: That I was a fat kid growing up, I was the fat kid in the back of the classroom that had no friends. I was a very feminine guy growing up because my mom worked in a hair salon and I didn't have guy friends. So I was very sensitive and I would cry a lot. But my step dad pushed me to do more sports and become more masculine than I was. Guys would joke on me and then I was every girl's best friend. It wasn't until my 9th or 10th grade year that I lost weight and started playing football and things changed.

Teen: Where would you like to see yourself five years from now?
M.C.: I would like to see myself being more successful in this business to the point where I can start taking care of a family. My dream is to be a father. This business is cool and all, but I do a lot of other things other than acting. I own a restaurant up on Hollywood Boulevard. I'm doing a lot of different business things so that by that time I'll be set up to where I can go to that next step in life. So I'd like to own more real estate and another restaurant and make films and music.
