FAR AWAY, BUT CLOSE TO
HEART...SOUTH AFRICA By: Lizy, 12, (aka princess-ed)

This summer I went somewhere special. South
Africa is too great to be put into words. For
someone who has always lived in the city, it may not
be a good experience (with faucet water that comes
from an elephant watering hole), but for someone who
likes animals and enjoys going to the zoo, or
Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the safaris are for you.
Yet, there is a city. Cape Town is the home of all
culture. Owned by the Dutch and oh so many others,
the city would take a lifetime to explore
everything. Signal Hill has great history with a
cannon firing every day at noon, which can be heard
13 miles away. The waterfront is filled with mini
malls and restaurants, but soooooo not the American
way. With a lovely meal of croc curry or impala
sirloin.....what do you choose?
African trips are donated to many auctions and
usually go cheap. The only issue is flights. A 17
hour flight is not good for someone who needs to lie
down to sleep (that is unless you go first class,
six thousand dollars per person later!) The good
thing is you have a personal t.v. and 20 movie
choices, along with games and television shows.
Don’t worry about service, the people there are
sooooo willing to help! Whether you hate the city
and are dying to pet a live African cheetah (I did!)
or explore the waterfront shops of Cape Town, climb
(or ride the lift) up Table Mountain, South Africa
is a great country. Two weeks are not enough! Talk
about a great summer! |
