In 1949, when communism became the Chinese doctrine, hundreds of thousands of people bailed and took up residence in Hong Kong, happy to be free of the oppressive regime. Then, on July 1, 1997, when the lease was up, Britain had to turn Hong Kong back over to the Chinese and now the city is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.
