VOLUNTEER! GIRLS GETTING INVOLVED

KATRINA RELIEF By: Cameron, 12, CA (AKA gregluvr)
For a school project, my homeroom
had an idea to raise money for Katrina Victims.
I had the idea to have a pie throwing contest.
Everyone like my idea, so we started to plan it
out. First, we had to get the volunteers, we
asked teachers from around school if they would
volunteer to have pies thrown at them. Many said
yes. Next, we made the posers. The posters said
the time and date the event would be held, and
where at the school, then it said this: "If you
want to get back at your teachers for giving you
a bad grade, then come and throw pies at them,
and help Katrina victims.” The contest turned
out great! We had a place where the people had
to stand, and we had tarps every where! We made
like $900! It was great! Oh yeah, I forgot to
tell you that we used whipped cream and paper
plates for the pies!
ALL IT TAKES IS A LITTLE WORK AND LOVE By: Mary, 12, CT (AKA TinkerSpell)
At my school we have a Community Service
Committee. This committee we started goes to a
Nursing home at least 1-3 times a month and we go
cook, serve, and prepare food at the local soup
kitchen for the hungry that we call the Friendship
Center Soup Kitchen. We also are working on Toy
drives for kids who need toys for Christmas. Coat
drive that we do every year to provide coats,
mittens, hats, scarves, and etc for the shelters. It
gets pretty cold up here! Right now we are
collecting shoeboxes and school supplies, little
toys, and small candies to place in the boxes and
wrap them to ship them to kids in Panama and other
places. We also do Thanksgiving Baskets in which we
all gather canned goods and send it to people who
need food for Thanksgiving! It just feels so great
to know that you’re helping someone in need and who
really needs it! Why not help someone yourself and
experience the happiness? You’re not losing anything
great, you’re just gaining something even greater!
TOY DRIVE By: Dominique, 9, IN (AKA CutieBear22)
Once upon a time my Girl Scout troop and I were
having a meeting when are leader said, "For
Christmas we are going to make a toy drive." We were
so surprised and felt happy helping people. Why we
did this was because there are some children in this
world who are too sick to celebrate Christmas at
their house so it’s nice to give them presents right
in the hospital. So first our troop picked a few
locations to where the people would drop off the
toys. After that well..... I don’t really know
because it has not happened yet. But all I know is
I’m helping out a making a difference.
KNITTING
By: Valerie, 10, PA (AKA ValCQ)
My name is Valerie and I love to knit. My friend
Michaela and I knit together all the time. This year
we are knitting hats, scarves, and blankets. We are
going to sell the things at our school at Christmas.
The things that don’t get sold are going to the
poor. Also at my church they’re having a thing so
knitters can knit hats for the poor. I plan on
participating. Keep on knitting.
HELPING OTHERS
By: Brianna, 10, NJ (AKA coconut102)
Helping others out is a wonderful thing. Everyone
should do it. My opinion is try doing it every day
like I do; you might set up a club and help others
out, visit hospitals and feed them, make sandwiches
or something, give them a drink, all those things
you can do in a club. I started a club every Sat. at
my house at 11:00 to 1:00 and we visit hospitals and
to be creative we get awards like a gift certificate
to an ice cream place or money or even a stuffed
animal all kinds of stuff but you only get it if you
work the hardest. Why don’t you start a club and you
will love it. Follow your dreams. Help people out.
Make a difference.
