BE A GREENIE: "TURN IT OFF!"
By: Genevieve Ticlo
Water, electronics, and light bulbs all have one
thing in common—they tend to be overused, and can
often be wasteful. There are simple ways you can
help to save the environment in your home, simply by
remembering this simple phrase: “Turn it off!”
-
Stop the Leak
Something as easy as turning off the faucet
while brushing your teeth can save gallons of
water per year. Shortening your shower can also
help save water, and can save you some money as
well!
-
Pull
the Plug
Did you know that about 75% of the electricity
consumed by household electronics, such as
televisions and curling irons, occurs while they
are turned off but still plugged in? If you
aren’t using it, unplug it!
-
Flip
the Switch
Despite the common misconception that switching
a light on and off wears out the bulb, studies
have shown that turning off a light when it will
now be used for more than 15 minutes can save a
household hundreds of dollars per year. Also,
flipping the switch can mean preventing unused
energy from escaping as waste.
-
Say
“No” to Standby
According to a Harvard University study, leaving
a PC on can cause heat stress and mechanical
wear. Instead of hitting standby, or letting
digital fish bounce around your screensaver
aquarium, give your computer a rest and just
turn it off!
Take the green challenge, and remember to turn
things off when you aren’t using them. It only takes
a little effort, but the results are enormous, and
will last a lifetime.
