Growing Up
Tania Gunadi was born on July 29th 1983 in the Asian
country of Indonesia. “I was born in the island
called Java.” says Tania, “You know when you go to
Starbucks, they have a lot of coffee brewed from
Java? So that’s where I’m from and the one famous
island is called Bali. Lot’s of people in America
and Australia and United Kingdom, they really like
to go to Bali because we have lots of beautiful
beaches so people can surf”
Growing up in her beautiful island country was a
happy time for Tania. “Instead of playing video
games, we liked to do lots of activities like hide
and seek or running around under neighbors cars or
going on someone’s roof. Pretty dangerous, I don’t
know why we did that!” she laughs.
Tania loved Indonesia, but she also knew that moving
to the United States would mean better opportunities
for her future. She entered a lottery for the chance
to immigrate to the United States like her brother
and sister before her and she won! At age 16 she was
on a plane with $200 in her pocket, bound for a new
life in California!
