Romi’s Childhood
On November 5th, 1979, a future star was born! Hiromi ‘Romi’ Dames was born and grew up on an army base in Japan. “I was born on an American army base in Tokyo, Japan.” says Romi. “I lived there until I was almost thirteen, when my family moved to Seattle. I loved living in Tokyo - it had all the hustle and bustle of living in a big city, but it was completely safe. My parents let me run around the city with my friends before I was even ten years old.”

At age twelve, Romi’s family made the decision to move from the army base where she had spent her entire childhood to Seattle, Washington. “When my dad retired from his job as a high school teacher, we had to leave the army base. The move to Seattle was completely random - we didn’t know anybody there. My dad is from New Jersey, and my mom is from Japan. They picked Seattle because they thought it was a good halfway point, and they heard that the University of Washington had a great library. I should mention that I am so grateful to my parents for always being my biggest supporters. They always helped me follow my dreams.”
