INTERVIEW: AnnaSophia Robb

AnnaSophia Robb

Stardom!
Only five months into her career, casting agents were searching for a young actress to play the starring role of India Opal in the upcoming movie ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’, based on the Newberry Award winning book by Kate DiCamillo.

AnnaSophia remembers the audition process, “I went out and there were five different scenes, and I auditioned for it. I thought I did a horrible job. I was crying at the end because it was so bad. About two weeks later, they called me and they said, ‘Can you meet with the director?’ So I had another audition which is called a ‘call back’. And then two weeks later, they called me and said, ‘Can you meet with the producers?’ So I did that. By that time, I had spent around three months in L.A. – or two and a half. So I went back to Denver, and then about two weeks later, they said ‘Can you come to a screening for us?’ And I was really excited. I flew out to Louisiana where the movie was filmed. I had my screen test. I was real utterly nervous and anxious. About two days later, they called me and said ‘In four days, can you come to Louisiana? I was screaming!” She got the part and a star was born!

That same year, AnnaSophia landed the role of competitive gum chewer Violet Beauregarde in the 2005 movie adaptation of the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. “It was the total opposite from Opal but I liked to play a brat because it was kind of fun playing mean. But then, of course, you need to change back to your real self. You don’t want to be mean or cruel.” she says. Few who have seen AnnaSophia turn into a giant blueberry in the movie will ever forget it!

Next came the uplifting and tragic role of Leslie in the movie ‘Bridge To Terabithia’. “I love Leslie.” says AnnaSophia. “She's always lit. She always has this happiness and glow about her that I think people just get attracted to. And no one can bring her down.”

For the movie, AnnaSophia recorded a song called ‘Keep Your Mind Wide Open’. “They asked me to sing a song for ‘Bridge to Terabithia’, which was a little intimidating. I actually tried to quit a couple times, but they just really wanted me to do it. And I'm glad I did, because it was an experience I've never done before, and stretched me, and I had a good time, and it was a fun thing.” she says.

Most recently, AnnaSophia played telepathic alien Sara in the movie ‘Race to Witch Mountain’ starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. “It’s such a classic and I’m just so excited to be a part of the re-imagination of it. It has so many great elements and Andy (the director) really did a great job of pulling the best elements out of that film and putting it into our film like the heart and some of the props even.” says AnnaSophia. The movie was a smash hit, earning $106 million dollars worldwide. Way to go, girl!

AnnaSophia currently has three movies in the works. She will be heard as Periwinkle in Disney’s animated ‘Tinker Bell: A Winter Story’ and appear in the films ‘Dear Eleanor’ and ‘The Space Between’.
