WRITING TIPS: BOOK REPORTS
|
Book reports are unavoidable and by the time that you graduate high school, you will have written more than you can count! Here are a few tips to make sure that you get the grade you want on your book report!
- It's always best to buy your own copy of the book that you are reading so you can highlight and underline important parts in the book. Look for passages that stand out, quotes that explain the characters, or parts that can show a "deeper meaning".
- "To be, or not to be." Teachers LOVE quotes! Make sure to include quotes in your report because they really help to emphasize the point that you are trying to make. Don't forget to put in page numbers as well.
- When writing the report, make sure that you don't just list the events that happened because it can get really boring. This is a good time to throw some quotes in or put in some detailed descriptions of the characters and setting.
- Remember that this is just a report, not the whole book! Don't put in really small events that aren't really important to the plot or the theme of the story. Make sure that everything is relevant.
- It's important to also discuss the theme of the story, which is the main idea of the story. In many books, the author is trying to show a larger picture, and something with a bigger meaning. So make sure that when you are reading, you look for things that are not as obvious, and that make you look deeper into the text!
These simple tips will allow you to write better book reports as well as get a better understanding for the story.

Just a reminder, you will get in trouble if you copy things from the Internet. Teachers have ways of finding out these things so don't take other book reports that you see online. You can use these to get a better understanding of your story, but if you hand them in as your own work, you're gonna get caught!
