WANT TO WRITE A SONG?
By: Bonnie, 13 (aka Bonniegirl)

Want to write a song? Do you have a musical instrument you want to make a use out of? How about wanting to use your voice in some way? Is school involved, as in an assignment? Or do you just want to be creative? Well, look no further, because I have the tips for you!
To write a song, you will need:

  • A voice/ musical instrument
  • Some knowledge of musical notes and pitch (paying attention in music class would be helpful!)
  • A pencil with a good eraser

*BONUS* Skill involving literature, and an imagination!

  1. Think of some words that sound clever. Look all around you for inspiration! The best words for songs come out of real life and human experiences.

  2. Hum or sing a tune and see (or hear, for that matter) what sounds good with the words.

  3. Create phrases, lines, stanzas, and verses of words to make into the song. I usually write a verse, the chorus, another verse, repeat chorus, a bridge which is like a verse but proving the song’s "point" or "story", a couple lines of the first verse or chorus if you want, and the chorus with different words [A B C B D B (or a piece of A); this is musical sequence]. Pick notes that goes with the story/theme or mood of the song.

  4. Look at your words and pick out a title that best suits your song!

  5. Create more songs and file them in a binder or folder. I would suggest putting the date of when you wrote the song and file them in that order.

*For an instrument, don’t mind the words. You might want staff paper (a staff has five lines and four spaces, and you can write music on these. It’s often easier.) to write with; after all, how are you going to be able to play your song???

Be creative! Show these songs with your friends and invite them to write one with you sometime!!!

Have fun writing, playing, and singing!!! ;-D
