BEAT THE HEAT By: Zoe, 12, (aka orangina25)

People say that the heat doesn't bug them. But this
summer things are different. The heat has rocketed
up higher than ever in many places. Some people
don't think it makes a difference, but it does.
Although you may not think it, the unbearable heat
is dangerous. If you are outside, that is when it is
the worst. Sometimes if you are playing sports, you
may ignore the fact that you are thirsty. Maybe you
are very into the game you are playing and don't
want to stop. Whatever the reason you need to drink.
Stop the game and get water…fast. If you don't get
water in you, you may start feeling dizzy and
headachey. Then if you don't get any liquid you may
end up passing out!
Often when you are playing a game outside or sitting
on the beach you may dismiss sunscreen. Maybe you
don't think it is necessary or that you never ever
burn. But no matter what, you still can get burnt.
It isn't just an annoyance but it too is dangerous.
When you get burnt it is damaging your skin. You
could damage your skin so when you are older you get
spots on your face or even get skin cancer!
Now you might be panicking and deciding to stay
indoors and in air conditioning. But there are
solutions. Maybe you could play tennis which often
is played indoors. If you aren't a tennis fan,
swimming is a popular favorite. You can still play
your favorite sport, but maybe play in the evening
or morning, just don't forget bug spray, but that is
a different story!
KEEPING COOL: HOW TO BEAT THE HEAT IN SUMMER By: Gabriella, 10, (aka Cocoflower)
Are sweating constantly? Do you feel like you're
inside a giant oven? These are a few tips on cooling
off.
- Dress light. Shorts and Tanks often work.
Black, Brown and other dark colors make you
really cook.
- Drink lots of water. Juice, Milk, and Soda
also do the trick!
- Wear lots of sunscreen. SPF 15 and up work
the best. Tans can cause skin cancer, early
wrinkling, and sunburns.
- Try swimming, squirt gun fights, car
washing, and running through the sprinkler!
