GET STARTED ON BLOGGING!
by: Nesima Aberra

Blogging is a popular way to keep in touch with friends, show off your writing skills and have an excuse to make a cool site for yourself. Blogging is short for web logging, like an online journal of your thoughts that people can read and enjoy. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what you write about, but if you want to know how to make your own blog, read on!

  1. Think about what you want to write about. You can blog about school, world news, your favorite TV show, life as a swimmer or anything that comes out of your head. Make sure you pick a broad topic that you can write about each day and have lots of different ideas for. The topic of your blog will say a lot about your voice, focus and audience.

  2. Come up with a title. Find a fun title that expresses you and your blog. If you’re a surfer girl, you could name it Sea Words; if you like food, Cooking Chica. The catchier the name, the easier it will be for people to find you and spread the word.

  3. Find a blogging website. There are lots of sites for bloggers, and they’re free. Some good ones are blogspot.com, livejournal.com and xanga.com. Most sites will probably have an age requirement, around 13, so double check. Put colors and pictures to personalize your blog and make sure to update it frequently or else your readers will slowly move away.

  4. Be careful what you write. Having your own blog is exciting and fun at the same time. Think carefully about what you write and don’t get too caught up in talking about your worst teacher, a kid in your class you think is weird, or give out personal information. Remember, everything on the web can be traced somehow. Whatever you send out is not private and you can never take back. Use your blog in a positive way while being true to your self.

Blogs are the 21st century form of a diary, but more fun and interactive. You get to see other people’s comments and get encouraged to write more. Who knows some big publisher might stumble on your page and love your humor and turn you into a bestselling author? If you’re entertaining yourself, others will be entertained as well. So get blogging!
