HOW TO MAKE THE BEST POEM
By: beth, 11 (aka beth007)

Ever think "I’m terrible a poetry"? Well, at first I did until I was taught poetry in school. There are many types of poems, not just the nursery rhyme kind. Two of my favorite kind of poems are color poems and quatrains. Here some examples:

Color Poem:
Yellow
Yellow feels like the warmth of the sun on my skin. Yellow looks like a duck in a clear blue pond. Yellow smells like sticky lemon candy. Yellow tastes like ice cold lemonade on a hot summer day. Yellow sounds like the happy birthday song at my party.

Quatrain (Has four stanzas):
My Family
My little sis is a pain. I’m never relaxed, not even when it rains. Sometimes she makes me want to go on a train! That’s my little sis.
My little bro likes snow. He wants my bracelet, I say "NO!".Oh, I just wish he would go! That’s my little bro.
Sometimes my parents nag. Even when I play tag! It really is a drag. That’s my parents.
I myself am very bright. I’m always getting answers right. This outfit is too tight! That’s me, alright!

Inspired already? Well, it’s time to learn some poetry vocabulary! Here is a glossary:

  • Cinquain - has five lines, describes something
    (EX:
    1.Thing:(Chocolate)
    2. Two describing words: (Creamy, cold)
    3. Three word phrase: (melts in mouth)
    4. One describing word and three word phrase or four word phrase or four describing words: (Smooth, creamy, heavenly, chewy)
    5. Describing word (delicious!).
  • Alphabet Alliteration - a poem with a noun that starts with a letter and mostly has the same letter (EX 1: This is a Bolaxian. A Bolaxian lives in a beautiful, blue building by a bubbling brook. A Bolaxian eats freshly brewed broth with buns, beans, and broccoli along with a big all you can eat buffet, etc. EX 2: All Alligators Ate, Blue Birds Bite, etc.)
  • Concrete/shape poem - a poem written in the shape of something it is talking about (I’m going to try to shape this like a ball
    (EX: Balls
    Are fun to play with
I throw my basketball into the hoop
I pitch my baseball at the batter with all my might
My favorite ball is a bowling ball, because it is shiny.
Sports like football and soccer include balls, too.
Tennis Balls are my sister’s favorite kind of balls
I am no good at kick ball "OUCH!"
    Balls can be dangerous!)

By now I know you’re inspired to write a poem! Pick your favorite poem above and start writing! Before you know it you’ll have a wonderful poem, by you! Now here are some tips of what you can do with your poems and how to help poem writer’s block.

How to help poem writer’s block:
Going outside is a great inspiration for writing poems, especially Haiku! Sit down it the grass and look around, and in no time at all you’ll have yourself an awesome Haiku poem!

For color poems you should investigate the things that are the color you are writing about (If you are writing about green look at the grass, taste a lime, or even touch a frog!).

Now, what to do with your poem? Well, if it is a color poem how about decorating it with the color you are writing about (if you are writing about the color blue, paint blue designs). If it is a haiku poem you can maybe let rain drop on it (be careful!) or make grass stains on it.

Now go hang your creation some where! On the fridge, in your room, in a frame, I don’t care. Just make sure everybody can see your poem!
