CHOOSING A DOG

dog
So. You've been begging and pleading for a dog since you were like, five, and your parents have FINALLY given in!

Of course, you're beyond psyched and, no doubt, a little anxious but, remember, getting a dog is a huge responsibility and there are LOTS of things to consider. Here's a list to help get you organized and on your way to becoming a certified dog owner! (Yay!)

Ask yourself the following questions and if you can (honestly) answer YES to them all, you are ready to get a dog.

  1. Will I be able to provide a safe environment for my dog?
  2. Will I be willing to give my dog plenty of exercise?
  3. Will I remember to give my dog adequate food and water?
  4. Will I help in the training of my dog?
  5. Will my family be able to afford the costs of shots and other veterinarian visits?

You also need to decide whether you're going to get your dog from a breeder, a pet store, a shelter or from a friend whose pup has just had puppies! This is a hugely personal decision.

Breeders and pet stores can be super-expensive, shelter dogs can have "issues," and, well, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Again, your best bet is to educate yourself as much as possible through reading books, asking questions and, trusting your gut. When that little guy looks up at you with big puppy dog eyes and it's love at first sight, you'll know it's right.

CHOOSING A DOG > More to Think About

There are more than 400(!) breeds of dog!

Some are suitable for families with kids, some aren't. Some need lots of room to run around in, others are cool in apartments. Some shed hair all over the place, others don't.

With so many variables to consider, your best bet is to read up on the kinds that appeal to you and see whether they'll fit into your family's lifestyle.

Your local library will have many books on the topic ("Choosing a Dog for Dummies" is a good bet.) Or CLICK HERE for an online Breed Table.
