BUILD YOUR OWN WEB PAGE: THE BASICS
Maybe you haven't had much of a chance to go out surfing the ocean this summer but, since you're here, you must be doing a fair amount of web surfing! How cool would it be if you could be like Miss O & Friends and have a Web site too? The good news is that you don't need to be a computer whiz to make your own splash in cyberspace. With a few basics under your belt you'll have others surfing their way on over to your very own homepage!
Getting Started
If you want to post your own page on the Internet, you'll need to find a host. Check out www.geocities.com to sign up for free space on the Web. You'll get a URL, or website address, that will allow people to view your page.
When putting your page together, you'll need to either write in HTML (the coding language used by site programmers) or 2) use an editor tool. Learning HTML is not like learning Spanish or French! You just put certain words inside of brackets like these < >. There's a really great book out there called "Teach Yourself HTML Visually " that helps make coding simple as pie.
If you'd prefer to go the easier route, you can use an editor like Netscape Composer (download at www.netscape.com) or Microsoft FrontPage. These are programs that let you create pages as simply as creating a word document. It will write all the codes you need, like to bold or center text, for you.
