PARTY IDEA: CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST
Bored? Why not throw a "Christmas in August" party? It's a great idea brought to you courtesy of the cool new book "My DIY" by Kim Potts.

It's the middle of summer, and you want a theme to get friends together, give them gifts and eat some yummy food? Christmas in August is your theme! Send out invitations in the shape of a Christmas tree or Santa (or use leftover holiday cards from last year), make Photo Cube Bookends (see the Room chapter in the book) with personalized photos of everyone for all your pals and serve up Edible Balloon Bowls (see recipe below) full of red and green M&Ms!

Edible Balloon Bowls
How do you make a bowl you can eat? The answer is chocolate. Isn't chocolate always the answer?

Materials:
2 packages chocolate chips
1 package party balloons
A large microwave-safe bowl
Waxed paper
A baking sheet

DIY Step-By-Step:
balloon

  1. Blow up several balloons to medium size and tie them off.

  2. Layer a sheet of waxed paper onto the baking sheet and make sure there is room in your refrigerator to place the baking sheet.

    sweetened chocolate chips

  3. Open the chocolate chips and dump them into the bowl. Microwave them for 30 second intervals (stirring in between each interval) until the chips are totally melted. Let the chocolate cool slightly, for a couple of minutes.

  4. Hold the balloon with the smooth end (the end opposite the end that is tied) pointed towards the chocolate. Dip the balloon into the chocolate and swirl it around for 10-15 seconds. The bottom 1/5 or so of the balloon should be covered.

  5. Set the balloon on the baking sheet, and repeat with another balloon. Put the baking sheet with both balloons into the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes.

  6. Remove balloons from the fridge and let them sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. Carefully pop the balloon and remove it from the chocolate . . . you have a chocolate bowl!

  7. Create as many bowls as you need, and fill them with fruit, ice cream, other candy, mousse or cake, and make sure you tell everyone they can eat the bowl!

Extra touch: You could use any kind of meltable chocolate for the bowls, including peanut butter chips or white chocolate chips (which you could then make into any color with food coloring).
