In 1947, architect Eero Saarinen's design for a sleek steel arch was picked from hundreds of entries to best commemorate westward expansion and, almost 15 years later, construction began. The 63-story structure took five years to complete and opened to the public in the summer of 1967 when the first of two tramways to the top became operational.
