San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is known as the "bridge that couldn't be built." "Huh?" you say, "But it was built." True. But back in 1933, when construction began, things like non-stop fog, 60 mile an hour winds and strong ocean currents, made completion of the 1.2 mile overpass, which connects San Francisco and Marin County, nearly impossible. Happily (especially for Bay Area commuters) workmen rose to the task and managed to defy the odds by finishing the job in 1937.
